A big fan of Wrath wines, I was enthused to try their new line of Ex wines. According to the winery, the label’s name takes inspiration from the Latin word meaning “out of.” “EX speaks to our focus on expressing the personality and characteristics of our Certified Sustainable (SIP) estate vineyard.”

About the Wine: The Wrath Wines Ex 2017 Sauvignon Blanc is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes harvested from the winery’s estate San Saba Vineyard located in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in Monterey, California. The vineyard is home to a variety of grapes, about 15 acres of which comprise the Sauvignon Blanc used for this wine.

The wine was fermented and aged in 100% stainless steel.

1023 cases produced.

13% ABV

Flavor Profile: Open the bottle of the Wrath Ex 2017 Sauvignon Blanc and find a bit of funk—the funk of pollen, green peas, wet grass. This Sauvignon Blanc presents a pale straw color on pour and in glass with, perhaps just a slight hint of yellow-green tinge when in the light. Initial aromas are certainly floral, with—dare I use the adjective as an adverb here—funky tropical fruits warmed in the sun: mango, papaya, hint banana, maybe a bit of passion fruit.

The palate of this Sauvignon Blanc is light, smooth, with a delicate acidity and a hint of effervescence when chilled (which I recommend). Dominant flavors are of passionfruit, pineapple, green grass, an ocean breeze salinity, lemon-lime citrus, and a hint of coconut. The finish is herbaceous but also includes a white pepper heat that lingers on the lips like a good spicy coconut curry would.

Food Pairing: And, thus, my ideal pairing with the Wrath Ex 2017 Sauvignon Blanc is, indeed, curry. Bon appetit!
