A delivery from Lindeman’s magically appeared on my doorstep one day. Not complaining — a gift of wine will never be turned down by me. I’d never heard of the name so had no expectations as to the value or quality of the wine.

Although I’m not usually a fan of the screw cap, I will say that it’s actually kind of great when one finds herself traveling quite a bit. No worries about forgetting to pack a corkscrew. So it was during my travels that I found myself enjoying my first bottle of Lindeman’s Bin 65 Chardonnay.

About the Wine: Lindeman’s Bin 65 Chardonnay is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes harvested South Eastern Australia. The wine was aged in French oak (guessing 50% or less new oak for less than a year).

13.5% ABV

Flavor Profile: In the glass, Lindeman’s Chardonnay is a funky yellow color. I don’t want to be crass, but it quite reminded me of pee-in-a-cup yellow. Get past that and stick your nose in the glass. The initial aromas are quite full body — there’s a softness that you could call creamy, but more like the cream of a good sorbet. That has to do with the fresh fruit aromas lingering in the background.

The palate, conversely, reverses these two elements with fresh fruits in the front and cream-esque-ness in the back. It’s a palate of soft-skinned fruits — think apricots, peach, yellow nectarine. And there’s just the slightest sticky-stink of raw honey. Though, please note, the wine is not sweet. That soft, supple texture eliminates any of that nonsense, and there’s a perfectly thin line of acidity from start to finish that keeps everything fresh.

I love the finish. It ends on a tropical note with serious hints of mandarin and lime zest.

Food Pairing: I paired the Lindeman’s Bin 65 Chardonnay with a fresh salad of butter lettuce, avocado, grilled onions, and cherry tomatoes topped with a blue cheese dressing. Loved this pairing — because the casual elegance of the wine, not fancy but tasty, was perfect for this mid-week meal. The blue cheese dressing was what kicked everything up a notch. By paralleling the smooth texture of the wine, along with any “creaminess” (if you want to call it that), it brought out a hint of latent sweetness in the wine and enhanced the overall level of acidity.
