Believe it or not, this is my first Lange Twins experience. The family-owned winery is a well-known Lodi staple that produces a very extensive portfolio of wines. Here I have something not from their Lodi home base, but sourced from one of my favorite mini-wine regions: Clarksburg. This wine is a testament, not just to the good reputation of the winery, but to what (I think) the climate of Clarksburg does best — crisp but earthy white wines.

About the Wine: The Lange Twins 2017 Pinot Grigio is made from 100% Pinot Grigio grapes harvested from the winery’s Merril-Johnson Vineyard, located in California’s Clarksburg AVA.

12.5% ABV

Flavor Profile: Open the bottle of the Lange Twins 2017 Pinot Grigio and find delicate aromas of green apple and pear, wet grass, and baby’s breath.

This Pinot Grigio presents a luminescent Champagne hue on the pour, settling into the glass with just a kiss of peach. Initial aromas are vibrant with floras, complemented by white nectarines and peaches and just a hint of passion fruit. Swirl and enliven those floral aromas with a bit of pollen and agave nectar.

The palate of the Lange Twins 2017 Pinot Grigio is light, bordering on thin, but for a light touch of texture that provides a solid backbone to what could be a water wine. Furthermore, there’s a delicate, but constant working acidity that amplifies at the very last second leaving a puckering of the tastebuds, especially around the perimeter of the tongue. Dominant flavors are of peach, peach sin, lime zest, lemon pith, nectarine, daisies, and a fresh sea air salinity just breezes by in the background, lingering like a cloud during the aftertaste.

Note: Do not over-chill this wine (as you may be able to see I did at first by that dewy label in the picture above). At a proper 49 to 50°F, the white wine is chilled enough to enjoy the refreshing acidity, but you’ll also find a bit of earthy aromas as well.

Food Pairing: This is a fun, easy sipper that I was able to enjoy through the course of the week with various meals including tofu teriyaki, vegan chicken salad, and, on other nights, simply on its own as an aperitif. A well-rounded, surprisingly well-balanced Pinot Grigio I would absolutely drink again and gladly recommend to all my wine-drinking friends.

More Info: I received the Lange Twins 2017 Pinot Grigio as a gift. (Cheers, Jim!) Price: $20. For more information about Lange Twins, their wine, and to purchase wine directly, please visit the Lange Twins website.
