I came across Da Luca wines specifically in conjunction with my study of Prosecco. While the winery itself is located in Sicily, they work with vineyards throughout Italy to produce region-specific Italian classics — Fiano, Nero d’Avola, Pinot Grigio, Primitivo. And I must say, after tasting this beautifully balanced Prosecco from the heart of Veneto, I’m eager and enthused to take a tour of Italy via Da Luca’s wines.

About the Wine: The Da Luca 2014 Prosecco is made from 100% Glera grapes harvested from various vineyard found in the the Treviso province (the main Prosecco-producing region) of Veneto, Italy. The wine was fermented in 100% stainless steel using methode charmat. (Learn more about production of Prosecco: Sparkling Wine 101: Piecing Together Prosecco.)

10.5% ABV

Flavor Profile: Pop the cork and as the bubbles fizzle and foam, become immersed in the savory scent of yeast and sea salt air. This Prosecco is a most pale-golden-straw yellow, both on the pour and in the glass. Initial aromas are both sharp, yet somewhat calming: The acidity penetrates the nostrils immediately, but simultaneously calmer aromas of lime leaf, pineapple, mango and passion fruit linger like a cloud all around.

There’s no denying that the Da Luca 2014 Prosecco is a dry sparkling wine, with a beautiful underlying essence of natural fresh fruits. Dominant flavors are similar to those sensed on the nose, but adding watery pineapple, underripe mango, and just a hint of salinity and beachy minerality. The finish is quite crisp with just a lingering coat of sweetness along the upper/outer surface of the tongue.

I enjoyed the Da Luca 2014 Prosecco as an aperitif on its own, but it would do beautifully alongside some soft cheese and salty crackers.
